Remember the pop-up cameras that briefly haunted the smartphone world? They were a clever trick to hide the front lens behind the screen, sliding up only when you needed a selfie. That gimmick faded, but the idea of a camera that moves never really died—it just needed time to grow up.
On August 12, Honor announced the Robot Phone, and this time the moving camera isn’t a party trick. It’s a fully motorized gimbal built into the back of the phone. The lens rises, swivels, and tracks people as they move. It can even hunt for its own subject. That’s not a typo. The camera actively looks for someone to film.
A Tiny Gimbal That Thinks
Getting a gimbal into a phone is an engineering puzzle. Honor’s solution is a titanium assembly with four degrees of freedom, packed with over 100 precision parts and built with 60-plus manufacturing steps. The tolerance? ±0.005 mm. That’s about a twentieth the width of a human hair.
The whole module is 65 percent smaller than earlier prototypes. One of its motors weighs just 2.6 grams—lighter than the joint motors used in some robot hands. But smallness alone doesn’t cut it. The gimbal has to keep up with real life: people walking, turning, even running while filming. It can spin at up to 360 degrees per second, and the motor that unfolds and holds the camera delivers a torque density of 120 N·m/L.
In plain English: the camera stays hidden when you don’t need it, and it moves fast when you do.
AI That Frames the Shot for You
The clever part is that this isn’t just a hardware stunt. The camera works with Honor’s AI to actually help you shoot. In a mode called “Inspiration Assist,” the AI recognizes people and scenes, suggests poses, and—here’s the kicker—moves the gimbal to adjust the composition. If you’re stuck on how to frame a shot, the camera can do it for you.
Third-party apps are getting in on it too. Douyin (China’s TikTok) has an “AI live tracking” feature that keeps the camera locked on a streamer as they pace around. WeChat video calls work similarly: if you get up and walk across the room, the camera turns to follow you. No more leaning into the frame or worrying you’ve drifted out of view.
To complement the moving lens, Honor added a four-microphone array with AI-directed audio. When the camera turns, the microphone focus shifts with it. If the lens is aimed at someone on your left, their voice gets priority.
Your Phone, Now With a Personality
Honor’s YOYO assistant can also control the gimbal. Make a hand gesture and the camera swings toward you. Play music and it bobs along to the beat. There’s even an animated face and a “YOYO lucky star” mini-game. Some of this feels like an electronic pet, which is exactly why Honor kept the “Robot” name. YOYO used to live entirely inside the screen; now it has a physical head that moves.
It’s a small step, but it points to a bigger idea: AI that can act on the physical world, not just answer questions.
Still a Serious Phone
All this machinery has to live inside something you’ll carry every day. The Robot Phone is 9.59 mm thick and weighs 248 g. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is 233 g. That’s a difference of just 15 grams—impressive for a phone with a full gimbal tucked inside.
It runs on the fifth-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite and packs a 7,060 mAh battery. The main camera is a 200-megapixel sensor, plus ultrawide and periscope telephoto lenses. The moving gimbal didn’t force any compromises on the usual flagship specs.
More Than a Trick: Real Filmmaking Tools
Honor didn’t stop at the moving camera. They added a custom image chip called the Honor Yuguang H1, which handles real-time video processing. It claims an 8 dB signal-to-noise improvement and 14 stops of dynamic range.
The bigger story is what the gimbal enables. To get stable, moving shots on a phone, you typically need an external stabilizer. Or you buy a dedicated device like a DJI Pocket, which combines a camera and gimbal in one unit. Honor just squeezed that entire concept into your everyday phone. No extra gear.
For videographers, the phone supports 4K at 120 fps slow motion, 4K low-light video, and real-time portrait beautification. And Honor partnered with ARRI, the company behind the ALEXA cinema cameras used on films like Dune and Oppenheimer. The Robot Phone is the first to support ARRI LogC3, the AWG3 wide color gamut, and 11 ARRI Looks. You can shoot flat for post-production or use preset color grades for out-of-camera footage. There are pro tools like false color, focus peaking, and zebra stripes, plus a 2.39:1 aspect ratio in “ARRI Movie Mode.”
So whether you’re a casual shooter who wants nice colors or a serious creator who wants raw flexibility, this phone covers both.
AI Is Getting Hands and Feet
The Robot Phone isn’t a one-off novelty. It’s part of Honor’s broader “Physical AI” strategy. At the 2025 Alpha Strategy announcement, Honor pledged over $10 billion over five years to build an AI device ecosystem. At MWC, they showed the Robot Phone alongside their first humanoid robot. They even entered a humanoid in a half-marathon in Beijing. The problems are similar: how does AI see the environment, decide what to do, and then move a physical structure accurately?
On the software side, YOYO is getting more capable. The Robot Phone debuts YOYO Pro mode, powered by a terminal-side model developed with Alibaba based on the Qwen LLM. YOYO can now execute complex tasks across apps—over 100 steps in a single command. Honor is also opening up capabilities to developers through “YOYO Skills,” which lets third-party services control the gimbal, camera, and more. Over 100 system abilities are now accessible.
What’s interesting is that the OS now has to orchestrate not just apps and services, but physical hardware. The camera can turn to follow a person, adjust its angle, or respond to voice and gestures. That’s a new kind of interaction.
A Glimpse of a More Fulfilling Life
Why does any of this matter for fulfilling living? Because capturing life shouldn’t be a chore. You shouldn’t have to wrestle with a stabilizer or miss a moment because you’re fiddling with settings. A camera that thinks ahead—that finds the subject, frames the shot, and keeps you in focus—frees you to be present. It’s the same reason we bought smartphones in the first place: to make everyday tasks easier so we can focus on what matters.
The Robot Phone isn’t perfect. It’s heavy, and the gimmick might wear off. But it’s a meaningful step toward technology that truly assists us, not just in the digital world but in the physical one. As Honor puts it, AI is starting to grow hands and feet. That could make our daily lives a little less stressful, a little more creative, and a little more fun.
The Honor Robot Phone starts at 9,999 yuan (about $1,400) for 12GB/512GB and goes up to 12,999 yuan for 16GB/1TB. It goes on sale August 18.
